Aeration Overview
Lets your lawn breathe and improves soil health
Aeration...Let your lawn breathe, relieves compaction and helps reduce sub surface thatch.
Aeration can be completed in different ways, the type which is best for your lawn will depend on different factors including the time of year and soil conditions.
The purpose of aeration is to improve soil health allowing water and nutrients to pass into the root zone, which also aids gaseous exchange releasing toxic chemicals.
The benefits of aeration include:
- Increases biological activity
- Assists nutrient efficiency
- Improves surface drainage
- Allows air into the root zone
- Will help reduce moss infestation
This leads to improved drainage, ie stops water sitting in the thatch layer, leading to a drier top surface which discourages moss and disease.
The soil will benefit from a less compacted structure enabling new root growth. New and strong root growth is a must for a strong healthy shoot.
Below is short video clip explaining how we aerate:
The types of aeration are:
- Hollow Tine (core aeration) – we remove plugs of soil from the lawn.
(Repeat Annually or every 2-3 years dependent on your lawn conditions - Solid Tine – using a "chisel tine" holes are sliced into the lawn and nothing is removed.
(Repeat Annually to create the best root development) - Spike – holes are punched into the lawn using a spike and nothing is removed.
At Greener Gardens we use both hollow coring method, as we have found this gives the best results when combined with Scarification. We aerate your lawn, rake up the cores and bag them ready for disposal.
We recommend over seeding with Green Velvet All Purpose Grass Seed by Barenbrug, to give that extra special finish, its available from our on line shop or van when we call.
