Summer care

During the year your lawns nutritional needs change, during the summer months our feeds gently provide the nutrient to help replace that lost by summer cutting.

We have experienced a very dry spell and this has started to take its toll on many lawns especially those with fine grasses. We would welcome some heavy rain as a welcome natural drink for the lawn and garden.

Applying a feed during a dry period will be safe and beneficial for the lawn, ensuring that the grass plant has the vigour to recover once adequate rainfall returns.

Summer Lawn Care, the weather, always a challenge…..

Our summer feed, will gently release its nutrient over the summer months, whilst it doesn’t require watering in, if you keep your lawn cut short this will reduce the amount of morning dew and can cause temporary discolouring. If you do cut your lawn short we recommend a light watering after application.

Our control emphasis on this visit will focus on any weed activity, especially those difficult to control weeds like Speedwell and Selfheal.

Mowing Tips during dry weather

We promote regular mowing all year, the golden rule as always is “little and often” but if conditions go dry you can help your lawn by raising the cutting height:

  • Ideal cutting heights for the majority of lawns is 30/50mm, if you have a fine lawn the 25/35mm
  • Keep the mower blades sharp for a great cut
  • Don’t forget to keep the edges trim for that great finish.

Our soil beneficial treatments Soil Improver and Biology Booster when used regularly both benefit your lawn with increased root development.

Growing your Own?

If you are one of the many UK households growing your own we would recommend that you do not compost the next four lawn clippings following any weed control application.

Other activity that will help:

  • Watering – Just in case we need to!

How much Water?

It is better to apply two good waterings per week to the lawn rather than frequent light watering. Your lawn will require moistening to a depth of 6″ weekly, for a loam or clay soil this will be achieved by approximately by 1-1½” of water. A sandy soil will be moistened to a depth of approximately 6″ by ½ -¼” of water, so what does that mean? approx 20-30 minutes. For those on a meter the cost of watering a small to medium size lawn is probably less than you think. With 1000 litres of mains water costing approximately 90p – for a few pounds you can even give a large lawn (500m2) a good watering.

When should I Water?

It is more efficient to water your lawn at the first sign of drought, rather than wait until the lawn has become stressed or dormant. Initial signs of a water deficit in the soil is wilting of the turf, at this stage footprints in the grass do not spring back. An additional sign of drought is a colour change from its normal green to a green/blue.

What do we do on our lawns at home?

Well, we have followed our own advise and:

  • Raised the cut height
  • We have been applying soil Improver for improving soil structure
  • We have started to use the New Biology Booster for root development.
